Aug 31:
FALL SOFTBALL!!! In response to the overwhelming amount of interest, Fall Softball seems to be taking shape. The Fall Softball information and sign-up page has complete details.
The Annual Tournament took place August 20 and 21 at Percy Ruhe Memorial Park. After 30 games had been played, Mangold Excavating, Scabs, Stahleys, and Lehigh County advanced to a single elimination semi-final playoff, all with 4-1 records. Mangold shut out Lehigh County and Stahleys beat the Scabs, setting up the tournament championship game. In the championship, Mangold defeated Stahleys, and closed their season with a final record of 26-3.
As unusual and unlikely it is, two other teams (Target and Etc.) had 4-1 records also, but got shut out of the tournament playoffs by tiebreaker. Etc. was clearly the surprise of the weekend, winning their first four games by a total margin of nearly 60 runs.
View the tournament bracket and results.
The annual All Star Game took place August 27 at Cedar Creek Parkway West. After a morning rain shower, the game was played under mostly sunny skies and was fun for players and spectators alike. 10 of the 12 teams in the league were represented (SKF and JRT were not.) The Blue Division won 24-18. Read the game highlights, batting stats, and box score.
For the very first time, a Home Run Derby was held after the All Star game. Walt (Scabs) and Megan (Mangold) won the derby by landslides. View the details and results.
Aug 18: Mangold capped off their successful season by beating Scabs, but had to fight all the way to the bottom of the last inning to do it. It was an exciting, back-and-forth game befitting of two of the seasons best teams!
*NEW* Tournament Information:
1) Field # 3 ground rule clarification. Over the hill means an umpire/base coach cannot see the ball from their normal position.
So a fielder may actually take a step or two down the hill, but as long as the ball can be seen the whole time until it is caught, it is not considered over the hill.
Once the ball cannot be seen, it is then over the hill. Over the hill on a fly is a homer. Over the hill any other way, touched or untouched, is all you can get.
2) The championship game will be played on field 2 if it starts by 6pm to eliminate the short left field.
Otherwise, it will be played on field #3 so we can turn on the lights.
*NEW* BLUE vs. RED Game Information:
The annual Red Division vs. Blue Division game will take place at HIGH NOON
on Saturday August 27 at Cedar Creek Parkway West field #1 (Mangold's field).
We also have use of the West Pavilion (as well as the field) the entire day.
The game will be 8 innings to make it easy to split the game in half for each roster.
Players should wear their team shirts and bring their own bats.
A Home Run Derby will follow the game, approx 2 PM. Everyone in the league can participate.
To participate, bring at least two (new or used) game balls.
Bring your own pitcher too, or else be subject to *my* pitching!
A BBQ will follow the HR Derby, approx 3 PM. Food and drink are BYO.
Quoits, bocce, and croquet will be setup; if you got a game, bring it!
Aug 16: Mangold beat Lehigh County, and the Scabs defeated SKF, to advance to the League Championship game. Mangold and Scabs split their season series. Division winner and wild card trophies were awarded, and the championship game trophies were put on display. The championship game starts at 6:15 PM Thursday at Percy Ruhe field 3.
Aug 12: Tournament schedule has been finalized. Check the schedule page for field assignments.
Aug 10: Scabs and SKF settle their tie off the field, with Scabs taking the pennant and SKF taking the wild card.
The playoff schedule has been finalized; games start at 6:15. Check the schedule page for field assignments.
Aug 9: Scabs won their final game Tuesday night to close the season in a tie with SKF for the Blue Division title.
A tiebreaker game will be held Thursday August 11 to determine the pennant winner and the 2nd seed for the playoffs.
Regardless of the outcome, both teams meet again in the playoffs.
4th seeded Lehigh County meets top seeded Mangold Excavating in the playoffs.
Aug 5: SKF defeated Mangold Thursday night, upping the ante and putting all the pressure on Scabs to win their final game.
If Scabs win their last game, a tiebreaker game will be held on August 11 to determine the division winner.
If Scabs lose, SKF wins the division title and second seed, and Scabs take a wild card and third seed.
Either way, Scabs and SKF play each other in the playoffs, with the division winner being home team.
Lehigh County (4th seed) will play Mangold Excavating (1st seed) in the playoffs.
If you haven't submitted your team's selections (two men and one woman) for the Red Division vs. Blue Division game, do so now. Game time and other plans will be announced next week.
July 27: Target plays spoiler, beating Etc. Tuesday night, giving Lehigh County a wild card berth.
Lehigh County will play Mangold Excavating in the playoffs.
Scabs and SKF remain locked in a tie, each with one game remaining.
If both teams win, a tiebreaker game will be held on August 11 to determine the division winner.
If both teams lose, SKF wins the division title by virtue of a better division record.
Either way, they both play each other in the playoffs with the division winner being home team.
July 20: Lehigh County took a step closer to a wild card berth with a victory over Etc.
LCAO can clinch a wild card berth with a victory against Scabs on August 9th,
or another loss by Etc.
If LCAO loses to Scabs, and Etc. wins its final games, ending in a tie,
a playoff between LCAO and Etc. will be held August 11 to determine who gets the wild card berth.
The eventual wild card team will play Mangold in the playoffs.
The race between Scabs and SKF determines who is the division winner and who is the wild card,
as both teams not only will make the playoffs, but ironically will play each other in the first round.
If SKF and Scabs end up tied with 3 losses, a playoff game will be held on August 11
to determine the division winner.
If they end up tied with 4 losses, SKF would capture the division title by virtue of a
better division record.
Team selections (two men and one woman) for the Red Division vs. Blue Division game are due by July 29. Also need one captain (volunteer) for each division. Still looking for help and suggestions. Game time and other plans will be announced in the next week or so. Send comments directly to Jon or use the contact us page.
July 15: SKF clinches playoff berth this week, but still trail Scabs for the Blue Division title. LCAO holds a slight edge for the final playoff berth over Etc., LCAO hosts Etc. Tuesday night!
July 13: Scabs still hold a slight edge over SKF for the Blue Division title. SKF and LCAO hold the edge for the final two playoff berths over Etc.
Team selections (two men and one woman) for the Red Division vs. Blue Division game are due by July 29. Also need one captain (volunteer) for each division. Also looking for interest levels and suggestions from each team for making the Red/Blue game more of a league picnic. Send comments directly to Jon or use the contact us page.
July 9: Scabs clinch a playoff berth and still hold a half-game lead over SKF for the Blue Division title. SKF holds a clear edge for the third playoff berth. And LCAO has a slight edge over Etc. for the fourth and final playoff berth. DSC Logistics still has a shot if they win out all their games.
The final vote is 7-3 in favor of changing the bylaws; the bylaw change is effective immediately. The new bylaw is:
No fielder, with the exception of the catcher, shall be closer than 46 feet to the batter until either the batter shows bunt or the bat contacts the pitched ball.
Team selections for the Red Division vs. Blue Division are due by July 29. Each team can select two men and one woman to play. We need captains for the Red/Blue game--let Jon know if you are interested. Suggestions for the Red/Blue game are being taken, in hopes of making it more of a league picnic than just a single game. A few volunteers are needed to help coordinate/communicate what's happening to all the teams.
July 6: Mangold clinches the Red Division pennant, while the Scabs hold a half game lead over SKF in the Blue Division. Lehigh County holds the edge over Etc. for the fourth playoff position.
Makeup games have been rescheduled, with the exception of the LCAO-Scabs game. All changes have been updated online.
A final decision regarding the bylaw change for how close a fielder can get to home plate (until a bunt is shown) is pending. Until then, for safety reasons, KEEP BACK!

The bylaws have been updated for 2005; the most significant changes are a switch to a .44 COR ball, a double first base is recommended but optional, and how pinch-runners are chosen, especially for women. There will also be an increased effort to squelch unsportsmanlike conduct.
